NSK: Welcome to the NSK Hot Seat, please introduce yourself to the readers!

3lau: Hey guys I’m 3LAU, pronounced “Blau!” for those who were wondering, and I’m really excited to start touring around, bringing the freshest house to America’s college campuses!

NSK: Describe your workflow when producing a track.

3lau: That’s tough, but I need to have a completely cleared mind, that’s probably the most important factor. I think it varies from time to time, but I’ve developed this template over the past 4 months that makes it really easy for me to organize my ideas. Both bootlegs and originals are all about the interaction between sounds, trying to sit everything in the mix so that someone who hasn’t heard any of the inputs independently, wouldn’t know any better. For bootlegs, compression and EQ take significant time to perfect. On the originals side, I always start with the hook, designing the lead, and working around it. While none of my new stuff is completely finished, I’m extremely excited to show it off when it’s all done!

NSK: We’re excited to hear it! In Tiesto’s remix competition earlier this month that awarded the winner the opportunity to open for Tiesto, your remix got the most votes (nearly double the 2nd place remix). Can you explain what happened next?

3lau: Well, unfortunately Tiesto picked the second track in line. For SRV and myself, it was pretty disappointing, still though, it only motivates me more to kill it harder next time, and let me tell you, the stuff I’ve been working on I’m more excited about than ever.

NSK: Quick: Justin Bieber or Tay Zonday? G.O.O.D Music or Young Money?

3lau: Bieber for sure! We share a name, and, contrary to popular belief, he has 10x the talent of other pop icons, say, Britney.. And for the second part of that question, Young Money…enough said.

NSK: Alright, one more: Spotify or iTunes?

3lau: iTunes…so many of my tracks I could never find on spottily. That being said, Spotify is awesome and will likely be used by 60% of the global population within the next couple years.

NSK: How do you balance college life at WashU with life as a producer? Feel free to give any college shout outs.

3lau: I don’t know yet, it’s tough cause the touring has just started, as have the exams. Seriously though, I couldn’t be in this without my girlfriend Ashley, my best friend Johan (who is practically responsible for my career in house music), and my manager/friend Ross. They have to listen to me blab and blab about all the stories too haha. It is definitely going to be tough to balance, but the music is so important, and I’m determined to do both.

NSK: You can do it! What’s your favorite song that you’ve made so far?

3lau: I actually took one of my old singer/songwriter style tracks and I’m turning it into a big room anthem…super stoked about that, it’s on the internet somewhere if you can find it ;-) hahahaha.

NSK: You’ve mentioned that you’re in the first stage of your artist career, and by the third you plan to use your vocals. Do you sing?

3lau: I’ve played guitar, piano, and i’ve been singing since I can remember. My biggest influences in music, before house, are groups like radiohead, the antlers, sigur ros, and I’m aiming to combine their Giant wall of sound style with house. Artists like Arty are already leaning in that direction, but my voice is definitely on the mellow end, and I think it will work really well with some truancy piano Ballads. I’m going to produce a couple originals on an EP first, but that last stage is what I’m looking forward to most!

NSK: Multi-talented, we like it! Describe you ideal collaborations.

3lau: Top artists to work with…M83, Thom York, Burial or Jonsi, just to see how they even come up with the things they do / learn some intense analog technique haha. House-wise, I think Alesso, R3hab, and Dallask are killing it right now; I feel like i’d want to learn from an artist who was in the process of discovering their sound, more than learning from an artist like Guetta who already has that shit down pat.

NSK: Lastly, why are you Not Some Kid?

3lau: I’m Not Some Kid, because I want to eventually create my own genre of post-progressive vocal house music!
